Andy Wirth and Olympic Valley Incorporation

Lake Tahoe’s communities found in its northern shores have not had an easy time over the past years. A drought that can be described as epic took a huge toll on the winter resorts found there and this affected the small businesses that depended on them badly. Apart from this natural challenge, there was also a political one; the incorporation battle over the Olympic Valley. This valley is home to North America’s terrain of the most iconic winter sports as well as the Squaw Valley Resort. Andy Wirth, CEO and President of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings believes there will be a relief on two fronts. He stated that the last four years have been tough but Mother Nature had favored them with storms that have come early this season. This aspect combined with temperatures that are cold have enabled Squaw Valley and other resorts based in the Tahoe-area to open much earlier than they are accustomed to in the past decade. Another beautiful thing is that the persons who were supporting the incorporation of the Olympic Valley have since formally withdrawn their incorporation efforts.

Squaw Valley Ski Holdings strongly opposed the incorporation move and went ahead to spend quite a fortune in opposing this effort. Wirth argued that the move could have led to high taxes on businesses and residents in the area and also decreased service levels that the people are accustomed to like snow plowing and maintenance of roads. Mr. Wirth also held the view that if the efforts bore fruit, it would have isolated the Olympic Valley from the other communities in the North Shore with whom they pooled resources to deal with issues affecting the region. You can read the whole story as published in the Reno-Gazette Journal.

Matt Landis: Notre Dame Lacrosse Superstar

matt landis lacrosse

As the 2015 NCAA Lacrosse season drew to a close, one player stood out and far beyond the pack. Matt Landis led his team’s defense to nearly shutout the Albany Great Dane’s Lyle Thompson, who gained only a single goal from 11 attempts in the final game of the season. He is credited with being the most effective player for Notre Dame, leading to the college’s victory, final score: 14-10.

His heroic drive this season did not go unnoticed. He received 4 top-level awards for this season: Atlantic Coast Conference 2015 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, he was nominated for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award, named the William C. Schmeisser Award Outstanding Defensive Player of the year for college lacrosse, and finally Landis landed the Epoch and Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week, recognition of his victorious defense against Lyle Thompson. Matt Landis is the first player in defense to win the Epoch/LM Player of the Week, this year.

The William C. Schmeisser Award is named after William C. “Father Bill” Schmeisser, who was a coach and before that a player in the early 1900s, for Johns Hopkins University. All this has fulfilled the promise of his performance above and beyond, noted throughout the year. He has remained steadfast and driven in helping Notre Dame earn the number one seed in the ACC championship. What Landis holds for Notre Dame’s future in lacrosse is yet to be seen. This is only his junior year at the college. His senior year should prove to be most interesting, to say the least.

Cain Velasquez V.S. Fabricio Werdum Preview

Cain Velasquez is the UFC heavyweight champion, and he will face Fabricio Werdum in the main event of UFC 188 if Jaime Garcia Dias does not make weight. UFC fans are calling the matchup a “superfight,” and it’s not without reason. Cain Velasquez is the most dominant UFC heavyweight champion of all time, but he hasn’t competed in nearly a year. Cain Velasquez has been plagued with injuries throughout his career, and many people are wondering how he will look after such a long layoff.

Fabricio Werdum is a very dangerous fighter, and he presents a difficult style matchup for the champion. Fabricio Werdum is a deadly striker, but he is also one of the best Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world. No one is as skilled as Fabricio Werdum on the ground. However, Cain Velasquez is known for taking his opponents down and pounding them out.

When Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum meet, UFC fans are unsure of what will take place. Some people actually think that Cain Velasquez will get submitted, but there are others that feel that Fabricio Werdum will get knocked out. Yahoo! Sports recently posted an extended preview of the upcoming matchup between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum. The UFC president is hoping that Cain Velasquez doesn’t get injured before the matchup. UFC 188 is just around the corner, and it should go down as one of the best matches of all time.

Carlos Condit’s ACL Tear

It happens to many athletes in every sport, but it is a very unwelcomed diagnosis. Athletes never want to hear that they have a torn ACL. For some it may mean the end to their professional career. For others, it may just be another obstacle they must overcome and welcome the challenge. UFC number 4 ranked welterweight fighter Carlos Condit heard those exact words after tearing his ACL in training doing a simple takedown maneuver. Condit, The Natural Born Killer however, is taking the news rather well and actually stated that it is a blessing in disguise.

Condit, who is finally cleared to fight after the devastating knee injury will take on Thiago Alves on Saturday May 30th at UFC Fight Night on Fox Sports 1. Condit stated that he feels very blessed to have the happen late in his career. Many fighters have this happen early on in their careers and in many cases, it is career ending. Condit seems to be very humble and is enjoying every moment he can. The hardest part of not being able to fight or even train for Carlos, was not the surgery or rehab, but sitting back and watching how his division has changed since his last fight. Condit last fought on March 15, 2014 when he was defeated by Tyron Woodley at UFC 171 – Hendricks vs. Lawler. A few people at Amen Clinics tuned in for that.

Junior Dos Santos Hopes Cain Velasquez Loses

Junior Dos Santos is the former UFC heavyweight champion of the world. He won his title several years ago when he defeated Cain Velasquez in the main event of the first UFC on Fox card sports analyst Brad Reifler says of Dos Santos. However, Junior Dos Santos would lose to Cain Velasquez in the rematch, and he was never able to regain his title since.

Cain Velasquez has been one of the most dominant fighters in the history of the UFC, but he has been injured for over two years. However, Cain Velasquez will fight Fabricio Werdum in the main event of UFC 188. Junior Dos Santos is hoping that Fabricio Werdum can somehow win the title. Many MMA fans believe that Junior wants Cain to lose, because he can’t beat him.

Fabricio Werdum is a very dangerous fighter, but Cain Velasquez is one of the best in the world. However, we need to see how Cain Velasquez looks after such a long layoff. If Fabricio wins, Junior Dos santos would like to face him in Brazil for the title. Junior believes that a matchup between himself and Fabricio Werdum would be one of the biggest events ever held in Brazil. For more information on this story, visit BloodyElbow.

Austin Rivers Shows He Can Play

Austin Rivers was terrific in college, but he has not done much in the NBA until late. With the Spurs looking to lock down the series with the Clippers with a 3-1 lead, Rivers played some of the best basketball he’s played in his life. He was great on both the offensive side of the ball and the defensive side – something that is often lacking in the NBA – and the Clippers came away with a win. The series is now tied 2-2, and the Clippers have a chance to move on. The Spurs are one of the best teams in the NBA, as they have been for years, so this is a big moment for the Clippers.

It’s clear to fans like Flavio Maluf (linkedin.com) that Rivers is never going to be an elite basketball player. Some thought he could be coming out of college, but he just hasn’t taken that next step. Even as good as he was last night, it doesn’t change the fact that he’s not the next LeBron James.

However, the NBA is full of good players who may not be superstars, but who still help their teams to win night in and night out. In many cases, it’s the way that these players step up in big moments that matters. Everyone knows that the stars are going to be good. When the other players step up, as Rivers did against the Spurs, it changes the game.
